eSimDynamicsTM

eSimDynamicsTM is a suite of dynamic model based offerings that include multivariable controllers, operational advisory tools, and plant specific dynamic training simulators. eSimDynamics is unique in applying the same dynamic model to these multiple and varied purposes.

The TOPS DynamicsTM process training solution, developed in conjunction with RWD Technologies, Inc., takes operator competency to the next level. Operators learn by working through process-specific exercises that are linked to a dynamic process simulation model. The operator not only understands the directional response to process upsets but also learns the magnitude and time response of the process to the upset condition.

TOPS Dynamics presents the operator with scenarios that show the magnitude of process disruptions and asks the operator to respond in pre-configured problems. The operator will troubleshoot and respond to these real life scenarios in exercises such as a reduction in feed rate, instrumentation failures, and other disruptions.

TOPS Dynamics is unique in that it can use the dynamic model configured within multivariable controllers as the basis for TOPS Dynamics model configuration. This significantly reduces implementation costs and assures that the TOPS Dynamics model accurately reflects current plant dynamics.

Another key eSimDynamics offering is multivariable predictive control. Multivariable control uses a dynamic model to anticipate and control the processes response to an upset condition. It smoothes process upsets, drives the process to constraints, and helps the operators to achieve eSimOptimizer setpoint targets more effectively. In other words, eSimOptimizer determines where the plant should be run and the multivariable controller will hold it there.

eSimDynamicsTM also includes an Operational Advisory function that is continuously updated with the latest plant data. The operator can test a process move in advance of making it by simply going to the simulator console, making the move, and seeing how the process will respond. The operational advisory tool runs at 50-100 times the actual process response, so the operator can quickly ascertain the impact of the move.

Finally, the eSimDynamics process model can be used for control system checkout. This feature allows the dynamic models to be used by client control engineers to test new control strategies prior to commissioning. This is particularly helpful for complex processes.
